Thurman Suffers First Stoppage Loss As Fundora Retains WBC Title

Keith Thurman (31-2, 23 KOs) suffered his first stoppage loss, as WBC Junior Middleweight Champion Sebastian Fundora (24-1-1, 16 KOs) retained his title.

Fundora secured a dominant sixth-round stoppage after the referee waived the fight off, one minute into the sixth. From the first bell, Fundora captialized on his 11-inch reach advantage. He caught Thurman with a southpaw left cross, immediately forcing the challenger into a defensive position in the first round. The champion pumped out over 40 jabs in the opening three minutes alone.

The fight could have ended early in the second round. Fundora landed a right hand midway through the round that buckled Thurman’s legs. To his credit, Thurman showed heart to get out of the round. By the fourth and fifth rounds, Fundora was in a complete control. The damage was visible, with swelling and blood appearing around Thurman’s left eye.The end came just 60 seconds into the sixth round. Fundora pinned Thurman against the ropes. Seeing that Thurman was simply absorbing punishment, referee Steve Gray stepped in to wave off the fight.
