Top UFC Light Heavyweight Contenders Reportedly Set To Fight One Another

With or without Jon Jones, the UFC’s light heavyweight division will be moving forward.

According to ESPN, Dominick Reyes and Jan Blachowicz is currently being planned for next month. A bout that would take place on September 26, UFC 253 would be the landing spot. It is unknown, however, if the UFC Light Heavyweight Title will be on the line.

Reyes (12-1) is ranked number one in the UFC’s light heavyweight rankings. Joining the UFC in 2017, Reyes ended up 6-0 before facing Jones in February for the UFC Light Heavyweight Title. The bout was hard-hitting and deemed controversial by many due to the unanimous decision scoring Jones got.

Following UFC 252, Dana White stated that Reyes would be the one next in line for the UFC Light Heavyweight Title.

Blachowicz (26-8) is a former KSW Light Heavyweight Champion. Joining the UFC in 2014, he is 9-5 with the promotion. The 37-year-old from Poland is on a three-fight win streak, last beating Corey Anderson via KO back in February. He is currently ranked third in the UFC Light Heavyweight Rankings.

The UFC must now wait on Jones, whose future in the octagon is unknown. Jones (26-1, 1 NC) is currently in a battle with the UFC over pay. This comes after Jones’ attempted to talk with the UFC about a potential “big money fight” featuring him v. heavyweight Francis Ngannou. Talks fell through, and Jones believes the UFC hasn’t been paying him what he felt he was worth.

As a result of his frustrations, Jones expressed a desire to vacate the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship and is looking to take a full hiatus from the company. With Stipe Miocic beating Daniel Cormier for the UFC Heavyweight Title, Jones may be interested in moving up to face off against the champion.

White has stated that there will be a UFC Light Heavyweight fight this year. Reyes and Thiago Santos were talking about fighting for a vacant title, but Blachowicz has been waiting for his time to shine.

UFC 253 is set to feature Israel Adesanya defending his UFC Middleweight Title against Paulo Costa.
