UFC Lightweight Champion Ilia Topuria (17-0) reflected on how a turbulent childhood across three countries forged his championship mentality.
Topuria is one of only 11 athletes to hold titles in two UFC weight classes. However, before the success, Topuria’s life was defined by struggle. Born in Germany to Georgian refugees, Topuria’s early years were shaped by the immigrant experience. At age seven, his family moved back to Georgia.
“We lived in Georgia. We studied at a school there, and anyone who knows the culture of our country knows that it’s tough. There’s a constant confrontation with the kids at school, and you have to stand up for yourself a lot of the time,” Topuria said
The final move came at age 15 when the family relocated to Alicante, Spain. It was here that Topuria discovered a local MMA gym, providing him with the outlet and discipline that would eventually lead to his professional debut just three years later.
“Without a doubt, you need those stormy moments in your life to really develop your full potential. Because if you always live in sunny days, I really think you don’t expose yourself to situations that require you to truly summon that courage. That courage is not put to the test,” Topuria stated
Topuria carries both the Georgian and Spanish flags into the Octagon, representing the two cultures that raised him. Topuria’s journey reaches a milestone on June 14, 2026, at UFC Freedom 250 (also known as UFC White House). Topuria will defend his title against interim champion Justin Gaethje.
