Trainer Diego Arrua Suffers Fatal Heart Attack While Coaching Wife’s Fight

Sabrina Perez’s trainer and husband, Diego Arrua, has died after collapsing ringside following a heart attack.

The incident occurred as Perez faced Skye Nicholson for the WBC interim featherweight belt. The latter would end up winning via a unanimous decision, but the win was overshadowed by what happened to Arrua. The trainer had been instructing Perez in her corner during the ninth round. That is when he collapsed as medical help arrived. Arrua was taken out on a stretcher but then passed away in hospital. The news understandably drew a lot of emotion from those in the boxing world.

“It is with deep sadness that we have been informed of the sudden death of Argentine coach Diego [Arrua], who suffered a devastating heart attack during the Sabrina Perez fight in Tijuana. The medical services did everything possible and he died at the QDEP general hospital,” Mauricio Sulaiman said

“Today I’m leaving Tijuana with a heavy heart. All of my thoughts and prayers are with Sabrina Pérez and her family during this incredibly painful and horrible time. My heart is broken for this warrior and I can’t even imagine what she is going through,” Nicholson stated
