Ortiz’ Trainer Expects Wilder Rematch
It seems that while many are expecting a heavyweight unification battle between Deontay Wilder and Anthony Joshua, Luis Ortiz and his team are expecting their rematch with Wilder before any unification battles.
German Caicedo, Ortiz’ trainer told George Ebro that they expect a rematch with the WBC world heavyweight champion in the near future.
“Yes, I think [the rematch will happen]. Joshua is young, he does not have to hurry, he has time, he can wait as long as he wants with three titles and he continues to sell out stadiums,” Caicedo told George Ebro.
Caicedo believes that Joshua has time on his side, and can wait things out, he also thinks Ortiz is the only viable option for Wilder.
“[Wilder is] a little older, he has no one to fight with, Caicedo said this week.
“Luis was winning the fight before the knockout, so Wilder has to offer the rematch because he has no other opponent. Who will give him a fight? Breazeale? Martin? There is no other important opponent ranked under the World Boxing Council. I hope it happens on pay per view.”
The rematch may have more complications than a potential Joshua-Wilder fight, as the WBC has set Ortiz in a final eliminator with Dillian Whyte, but Whyte is also negotiating an IBF eliminator with Kubrat Pullev, with the winner set to face Anthony Joshua.
