Tszyu Chases Greatness As Errol Spence Fight Waits In The Wings

Tim Tszyu is chasing greatness as he prepares to take on Sebastian Fundora this Saturday.

Tszyu and Fundora will fight on PBC’s first PPV with Amazon Prime Video. Tszyu will defend his WBO Junior Middleweight Title, while the vacant WBC belt is also up for grabs. A victory makes Tszyu a unified champion, and since the IBF and WBA belts are also vacant, he has the chance to become undisputed.

Tszyu’s father, Kostya Tszyu, won numerous belts in his career at 140 pounds. Kostya secured the IBF Junior Welterweight Title in 1995. That was followed up by the WBC belt in 1999 and the WBA and IBF belts in 2001. Kostya was also voted as Ring Magazine’s best 140-pounder. Tszyu hopes to follow in his father’s footsteps and leave a mark in the sport.

“A lot of fighters these days are lazy. Now I feel like every day is growth, growth, growth. A lot of people, they remain in the same position. Yes, they’ve got talent, but they just think that they can’t get better, and you see a lot of it. I think that’s the difference between us. I want to be a throwback fighter; just keep it old school. I look up to those guys who actually fought in the ring a lot of the time. These are the types of things that you don’t forget. And I want to be one of those types of things that you don’t forget,” Tszyu said

The winner of Tszyu vs. Fundora is expected to face Terence Crawford. The WBO made the order to face Bud, the WBO Super Champion at 147. However, Tszyu’s manager, Glen Jennings, was open to his fighter vacating and fighting Spence instead. A fight with Spence is a much bigger draw and the chance to face a PPV star. Spence announced he would attend Tszyu’s fight with eyes on the winner.

Tszyu has reacted positively to that news. The Australian spoke about relishing other fighters chasing him. The WBO champ had been chasing Jermell Charlo to get his mandatory shot. Charlo avoided Tszyu, facing Canelo Alvarez at 168, as the WBO stripped him. Once Tszyu became the WBO champion, he was focused on making the big fights. Spence is a name he has been eyeing for a while.

“I’ve wanted Errol Spence for a long time. We’ve had history, he’s called me a few things so I’d like that fight as well. Come to papa. Come to papa. It feels good. And that’s why we went down this path of collecting the belts, because then they come to you. I was in that position where I was chasing, chasing, chasing Charlo. Now they’re coming to me. And it’s a bigger responsibility for them to come to me. So it’s beautiful, man. These are the types of moments that I’ve always wanted. Big moments,” Tszyu stated
