Tyson Fury: Billy Joe Saunders Could Be Canelo Alvarez’s Kryptonite

Tyson Fury is of the belief that Billy Joe Saunders can find success against Canelo Alvarez.

Saunders is expected to take on Canelo in May. Canelo will have to defeat Avni Yildirim on February 27 and walk out of the bout unscathed. Saunders holds the WBO Super-Middleweight Championship, while Canelo is the WBA (Super), WBC, and The Ring titleholder.

During an interview with Gareth A. Davies, WBC Heavyweight Champion Fury said he believes Saunders’ style could give Canelo problems (via BoxingScene.com).

“Me and Billy Joe Saunders, we are not journeymen, we are not in boxing for a payday. We’re not in boxing to make some numbers up and get a few extra million quid in our bank. Not interested.

“We would rather have zero money and win than take fights we’re not ready for. He needs to be active and he will punch Canelo Alvarez all around the ring. Canelo Alvarez’s kryptonite is someone who boxes and moves — southpaw, slick, good feet, good hand speed, good power. Billy Joe Saunders does all of that.”

Saunders is coming off a successful WBO Title defense against John Ryder via unanimous decision. It was his second successful title defense. The victory extended Saunders’ pro boxing record to 30-0.

Canelo has gone 12-0-1 since suffering his lone career loss to Floyd Mayweather back in September 2013. His last outing took place in December 2020. Canelo earned a one-sided unanimous decision victory over Callum Smith. It was this victory that earned Canelo the WBA (Super), WBC, and The Ring gold.
