UFC 226: Cormier Makes History, Lesnar Makes Impact

Daniel Cormier has made UFC history, becoming the fifth fighter in UFC history to win titles in two weight divisions, and the second UFC fighter to hold two titles at the same time.

Cormier, already the light heavyweight champion, defeated Stipe Miocic to win the UFC Heavyweight Title in the main event of UFC 226 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The two started slow before Cormier landed a big right hand and both men clinched up against the cage. After Miocic got Cormier’s back from a takedown, Miocic seemed to take control with several strikes and knees before Cormier finally answered back. Both men exchanged combinations before time was called due to a finger poking Miocic in the eye.

When the fight resumed, the two exchanged before a clinch that saw Cormier land a sharp hook right on the chin of Miocic, knocking Miocic out and becoming the new UFC heavyweight champion.

Following the fight, Cormier called out Brock Lesnar, who arrived into the arena prior to the main event. Lesnar proceeded to enter the cage and shove the new heavyweight champion.

In the co-main event of the evening, Derrick Lewis defeated Francis Ngannou via unanimous decision. The fight was expected to not go past the first round, but neither fighter showed much activity. The fight possibly broke the UFC record for least punches thrown in a fight, as both men landed a combined 20 punches by late in the third round. Referee Herb Dean warned both men twice for timidity.
