UFC 229 Live Results

Finally, Conor McGregor and undefeated UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov collide in arguably the biggest fight in UFC history at UFC 229.

The bad blood between the two rivals is extremely personal. It all began two years ago leading up to UFC 205, the event where McGregor won the UFC Lightweight Title and became the MMA promotion’s first fighter to hold two weight division titles simultaneously. Nurmagomedov — then 24-0 — felt McGregor robbed him of a deserved title match.

McGregor then went inactive and had his boxing fight with Floyd Mayweather, while Nurmagomedov chased after the UFC Lightweight Title again, defeating Edson Barboza last December at UFC 219 before capturing the title with a win over Al Iaquinta at UFC 223.

That UFC 223 was surrounded by controversy based on the pair’s rivalry. First, Nurmagomedov and then-interim champion Tony Ferguson were set to square off for the lightweight title that would be stripped from McGregor with the opening bell. But Ferguson was injured in a freak accident at a press conference, forcing a rotating door of replacement opponents. Two days before the event, after Nurmagomedov and Artem Lobov — friend and training partner of McGregor — got into a confrontation, McGregor and a crew of guys stormed the Barclays Center, where McGregor threw a hand dolly into a bus that held UFC fighters including Khabib. McGregor would plead guilty to disorderly conduct.
