UFC 249: Attendance, Gate, Bonuses

Even without fans in the Vystar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida, the UFC was able to put on a show many will never forget.

UFC 249 was unable to generate a gate due to the coronavirus affecting crowds attending sporting events. Strange circumstances did result in big moments, however. The main event was Justin Gaethje beating Tony Ferguson for the interim UFC Lightweight Title, while the co-main event was Henry Cejudo beating Dominick Cruz to retain his UFC Bantamweight TItle.

The main event earned Fight of the Night honors. Ferguson and Gaethje went to war, with the former showing the results from it. Gaethje would decimate the body of Ferguson, who had cuts on the bottom and top of both of his eyes. With vicious left hooks to the face and body, Gaethje’s strikes were lethal. Ferguson was able to hold on and tried to make it competitive, hitting hard shots of his own. In the end, the referee stopped the contest following a staggering Ferguson not being able to hold off any more shots.

Gaethje also earned part of the Performance of the Night bonus. It was his ninth overall bonus in seven UFC fights.

The other fighter to earn the bonus was Francis Ngannou (15-3). The former heavyweight contender only needed 20 seconds to knock out Jairzinho Rozenstruik. Backing him into the cage, Ngannou had Rozenstruik down before he knew what happened. It was his eleventh win via knockout and fourth in a row.
