UFC 296: Edwards Restrained During Staredown Following Covington’s Remarks About His Late Father

Leon Edwards and Colby Covington were separated during their UFC 296 welterweight staredown.

Edwards makes the second defense of his title following consecutive wins over Kamaru Usman. He is undefeated since 2015, when he came second best to Usman. Covington has the third chance to win a title after losing to Usman on two occasions: a fifth-round stoppage at UFC 245 and a unanimous decision loss at UFC 268. Tempers flared during the staredown with so much at stake.

The footage shows Covington controversially mentioning Edwards’ late father, who was shot and killed when Edwards was 13. “I’m bringing you to the seventh layer of hell. We’ll say ‘what’s up’ to your dad while we’re there,” Covington said. Edwards responded by throwing a water bottle at him.

Covington continued to make further remarks: “He’s the ultimate feeling champion. He’s no ultimate fighting champion. Better get the tissues ready,” Covington added. The champion attempted to get closer, but security intervened to de-escalate the situation. The outburst has made it all the more personal, leaving the loser with nowhere to hide.
