UFC Boston: Reyes TKOs Weidman, Wants Jones

Dominick Reyes has made his claim for a UFC light heavyweight title shot, as he quickly stopped former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman in the main event of UFC Boston.

Weidman, who was making his light heavyweight debut, attempted to get the fight to the ground almost immediately. While he scored a takedown, it was not long before Reyes got back to his feet and out of Weidman’s grasp.

Reyes then used his striking to land a big left hand that dropped Weidman before finishing the former All-American wrestler off with strikes until the referee stepped in.

Following the fight, Reyes, who moved to 12-0 (6-0 in the UFC), turned his attention to UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.

“Hey Jon, I don’t want any party favors,” Reyes said. “I want that belt, baby, let’s go.”

The UFC Boston co-main event saw Yair Rodriguez score a win over Jeremy Stephens. It was a rematch of their UFC Mexico City main event, which ended in a no contest in 15 seconds after an accidental eye poke.

The action in that fight was heavy right out the gate, as Rodriguez attempted a flying side kick before unleashing a flurry of kicks, while Stephens threw loads of power shots that, while leaving him open, saw him attempt to finish the fight early. Rodriguez got the better of the striking game in the first round before dropping and nearly finishing “Lil’ Heaten” in the second.

Stephens survived and even got Rodriguez’s back to the cage later in that round before throwing everything he could and scoring a takedown in the third. It wasn’t enough, however, as Rodriguez won with 29-28 scores on all three judges’ cards.

The night also saw Greg Hardy face Ben Sosoli in a fight that saw little heavy action and tons of sloppiness. Hardy was originally given a unanimous decision, but after he was seen receiving a non-exempted inhaler in his corner between the second and third rounds, the bout was quickly overturned to a no contest.
