UFC Busan: Korean Zombie TKO’s Edgar In First Round

When the fight was announced, there was a sense of worry from the UFC fans. Was fighting a month earlier than expected the right move for Frankie Edgar? It took one round for the question to be answered. Inside the Sajik Arena in Busan, South Korea, Chan Sung Jung dominated Frankie Edgar with a round-one knockout.

The Korean Zombie (16-5) has now won three of his last four since returning to action in 2017. All three wins have come via knockout. Now on a roll, Jung had only one request: to get a title opportunity.

“I was ready to fight all five rounds for 25 minutes, but my coaches and team said that’s not going to happen,” Jung stated in the post-fight interview. “I want Volkanovski.”

Edgar (22-8-1) tried to start the fight the right way with leg kicks, but Jung was playing it close to the vest. His defense was sharp, avoiding any major hits. Then he stopped playing with his food. Jung hit a nice right as well as an uppercut that dropped Edgar down to the mat, and he started pounding away at the former UFC Lightweight Champion.

Jung then attempted a rear-naked choke but Edgar was able to fight out of it. The Korean Zombie then started striking as he was on Edgar’s back.

Right as he was brought to the floor, Edgar was told several times by referee Marc Goddard to get back up. He eventually did, but it was all for naught. Right uppercuts and elbows decimated Edgar, knocking him down again. Jung then struck from behind once again, and Goddard saw enough, ending the contest after three minutes.

The Korean Zombie ended up out-striking Edgar 79-9. Edgar has now lost two in a row and is 1-3 in his last four fights.

In the co-main event, Volkan Oezdemir defeated Aleksandar Rakic via split decision, (29-28, 28-29, 29-28). The light heavyweights put on a display of athleticism worthy of a potential title fight. Rakic (12-2) started off hot with a flying knee and attempted hard punches, but it was Oezdemir (17-4) who utilized his kicks for the ultimate advantage.

Oezdemir has now won two in a row following a three-fight losing streak. Rakic suffered his first loss since his first fight in 2011, breaking a twelve-fight win streak.
