At UFC 211, the bout between Eddie Alvarez and Dustin Poirier went to a No Contest after an illegal knee. But now, a clear winner was declared, as Poirier scored a victory in the main event of UFC Calgary.
Poirier threw a couple of leg kicks to start the fight, as the two felt each other out. Two minutes in, a kick to Alvarez’s leg nearly got him off balance, which Poirier used to close the distance. Alvarez attempted a takedown, but he was quickly shrugged off. Both men reset and fought at range before Poirier came after Alvarez with some aggression, though Alvarez used his footwork to get away. The two traded away with a good exchange until the end of the first.
Alvarez got started throwing a few shots early on in the second before catching a kick and trying to get a guillotine. But after slipping out, Poirier jumped up and got a guillotine of his own. And while “The Diamond” had the submission on for a while, Alvarez managed to slip out of his attempt. Poirier attempted to get the fight back to the ground and in a guillotine again, but Alvarez got out into ground-and-pound position before getting in a neck crack and eventually a rear-naked choke. Alvarez transitioned into the top mount, and eventually a top mount against the cage. However, the two were stood back up after Alvarez was warned sternly for throwing a 12-6 elbow.
Suddenly, Poirier charged with a knee and flurry of punches. Despite Alvarez’s best efforts to cover up, he was overwhelmed before the referee stopped the fight.

In the co-main event, Jose Aldo found himself in some serious trouble after taking a barrage of shots. But one punch to the liver changed the momentum, and Aldo managed to finish off Jeremy Stephens for his first finish since 2013. Joanna Jedrzejczyk dominated Tecia Torres for a unanimous decision, while lightweight prospect Alexander Hernandez scored a win over countryman Olivier Aubin-Mercier.
