UFC Fresno Recap: Ortega Submits Swanson

In a main event match-up pivotal to the positioning amongst the featherweights in the UFC rankings, sixth-ranked Brian Ortega defeated fourth-ranked Cub Swanson in the main event of the UFC’s Fight Night event from the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California.

Swanson, the more experienced fighter in this bout, was nailing Ortega with several shots early on, but Ortega somehow managed to power through the swarm and hold his ground. Ortega caught Swanson in a choke hold in the closing seconds of the first round, but Swanson somehow managed to survive.

But soon, Swanson found himself trapped again in the second round after Ortega jumped guard and brought him to the ground. And while Ortega’s grip was slipping, he adjusted and sunk the choke back in more, forcing Swanson to tap out and give Ortega the win.

Ortega now moves to 13-0, with 1 No Contest, and a 5-0 UFC record.

“Five finishes, every fight in the UFC I have a finish,” Ortega said after the bout. “Feel like a dark horse, I just have a different approach.

“He has a big neck, so I wrapped him up and I felt like I was slipping, so I rewrapped and I locked it in. My standup gets better and better and I’m able to hang with the best.”
