RECAP: Pettis Outlasts Moreno

No. 6 flyweight Sergio Pettis came away with a unanimous decision victory over No. 7 Brandon Moreno in the main event of the Aug. 5 UFC Fight Night that took place from the Arena Ciudad de Mexico in Mexico City.

Pettis was shaky in the first round, as Moreno caught one of his kicks about halfway through the round and proceeded to hold him down there. From that time on until the end of the bell, Moreno worked Pettis on the ground, as Pettis struggled to escape and avoid a rear-naked choke.

The pace from Moreno definitely slowed down in the next round, however. Pettis took advantage, catching two kicks before delivering two head kicks of his own. While Moreno caught the second one and took Pettis down, Pettis nearly locked in a triangle before Moreno got out and Pettis got right back to his feet. Pettis seemed to then outwork Moreno for the rest of the second. That continued into the third, as Pettis out-struck Moreno, and Moreno could not get a takedown in no matter how hard he tried.

Moreno regained some traction in the fourth, as he kept up with Pettis better, and even landed a damaging shot. But that was accompanied with several big shots missed by Moreno, while Pettis landed several significant strikes and even attempted a cartwheel kick.

Moreno got a takedown in early in the fifth, but did not do much with it.

In the end, the judges gave the fight to Pettis, 49-46, 48-46 and 48-46.

While the main event went to a decision, seven fights tonight ended in the first round, tying a modern-era UFC record. Dustin Ortiz’s knockout during the prelims set a new UFC flyweight record for fastest finish.

This is the final UFC card for about a month, as a lot of the focus over the next few weeks will be on the Aug. 26 showdown between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather.
