The plan to save the flyweight division could be in big trouble. Deiveson Figueiredo (127.5) came into the UFC Norfolk weigh-ins 2.5 pounds over the flyweight limit. As a result, he was fined 30% of his purse and is unable to win the UFC Flyweight Championship.

The 32-year-old Figueiredo (17-1) was granted an hour to try and cut the weight, but did not take the full hour to try. He missed weight for the first time in his career. Joseph Benavidez, Figueiredo’s opponent, made weight at 124.5 pounds.

Figueiredo, who is 6-1 with the UFC, has joined some elite company. The last fighter to not make weight and still compete in a title fight, only to be ineligible for the title, was Yoel Romero.

It is unknown what would happen to the title if Figueiredo were to win. Henry Cejudo did relinquish the belt to focus on his UFC Bantamweight Championship. There is an option that he could reclaim the belt if Figueiredo won and was ineligible to keep it, however. In his third title fight, and first since 2013, Benavidez (28-5) must win the title in order to keep the division from moving backwards.

The only other fighter not to make weight was Grant Dawson (149.5), who is set to face Darrick Minner.

UFC Fight Night 169 takes place inside the Chartway Arena on February 29.
