UFC St. Petersburg Live Results

The UFC makes its second-ever landing in Russia on April 20, as the worlds-leading MMA promotion presents UFC St. Petersburg, live from the Yubileyny Sports Palace.

The main event will see a heavyweight collision, as former UFC title challenger and Strikeforce and DREAM champion Alistair Overeem continues to work on his rise back up the ranks, while native Alexey Oleynik seeks to impress more eyes, hoping to get a title shot of his own. Oleynik takes this fight on about two weeks’ notice after Overeem’s original opponent, another Russian in Alexander Volkov, was forced off the card.

After losing three of his first five UFC bouts, Overeem racked up four straight wins en route to a title shot against Stipe Miocic at UFC 203. Overeem lost the fight but rebounded in 2017 with wins over Mark Hunt and Fabricio Werdum. His momentum was halted, however, by getting stopped in violent fashion by Francis Ngannou at UFC 218 and Curtis Blaydes at UFC 225. Overeem last competed in November at UFC Beijing, getting a first-round TKO of Sergey Pavlovich.

Oleynik is 6-2 in the Octagon since first appearing in 2014. He raised eyes with a January 2017 win over Viktor Pesta, the first time a UFC fighter won a bout via Ezekiel Choke. Oleynik stopped Travis Browne at UFC 213 before losing to Blaydes at UFC 217. He is coming off back-to-back, performance-bonus earning submission wins in 2018. He submitted Junior Albini at UFC 224 with another Ezekiel Choke before competing in the UFC’s first Russian event, UFC Moscow, back in September and got an upset, first-round submission of Mark Hunt.
