UFC Working On Brian Ortega-‘Korean Zombie’ Chan Sung Jung Contender Fight
An important featherweight bout with title implications could be making its way to an octagon near you. UFC President Dana White spoke to ESPN to announce that the promotion is booking a fight between Brian Ortega and Chan Sung Jung.
There is currently no location or date set for this bout. White went on to say that the winner of the fight would go on to face the winner of the rematch between UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski and former champion Max Holloway.
“Ortega and The Korean Zombie are gonna fight,” White stated, via MMA Fighting. “You know how I just went out and said (about the Tony) Ferguson fight against (Justin) Gaethje, I said ‘I absolutely, positively guarantee you that this fight will be great.’
“That’s the same thing with Brian Ortega vs. The Korean Zombie, there’s no way this fight is boring. And the guy that comes out of that fight would be next in line for a title shot.”
Jung (16-5) is currently on a two-fight win streak. His last bout was a TKO-win against Frankie Edgar in South Korea. After completing military service following a 2013 bout with Jose Aldo for the UFC Featherweight Title, “The Korean Zombie” has gone 3-1 in his last four bouts.
Ortega (14-1, 1NC) last fought in December 2018, losing to Holloway for the UFC Featherweight Title. The loss ended a streak dating back to 2010, with an overturned no-contest against Mike De La Torre the only exception.
Both fighters were supposed to fight on the December 21 card in South Korea, but Ortega had to back out of the fight due to an injury. As a result, Edgar, who was planning to move up in weight, took his spot.
The UFC recently got the green light to return to Las Vegas by the Nevada Athletic Commission. If there are travel issues, “Fight Island” might also be an option.
