Undisputed: Shields Runs Through Hammer, Calls Out Braekhus

An undisputed champion has been crowned in boxing’s female middleweight division, and her name is Claressa Shields โ€” who defeated Christina Hammer to retain her WBA/IBF/WBC titles and claim the WBO championship.

Hammer got off on the right foot to start the fight, at one point getting Shields’ back to the ropes with jabs in the opening frame. Shields turned the tables on her in the next round, however, continuously landing on Hammer and getting her back to the ropes.

Shields continued her flurry in the fourth round, and while Hammer had a slightly better defense, she seemed troubled when “T-Rex” worked in close. After trading between both women in the fifth, Hammer came out aggressive in the sixth round, attempting to get a second-half comeback started. Shields went move-for-move with her and then caught the German’s attention with an overhand attempt early in the seventh round.

Shields battered Hammer around in the seventh round and stunned her throughout the eighth, with Hammer losing her mouthpiece at one point. Hammer was forced into retreat during the round, and the fight arguably could’ve been stopped.

Nonetheless, the fight went on and Shields continued to come forward and pick apart Hammer, landing where she could and finding the perfect countershots, to which Hammer had no answer.

All three judges scored the bout in Shields’ favor 98-92.

Following the fight, however, Shields let it be known she’s far from done in her quest to take over women’s boxing and grow it, as she called out undisputed female welterweight champion Cecilia Braekhus.
