Charlo experienced a fracture in two places of his left hand on Tuesday while sparring at his gym in Houston. He visited two physicians and a hand expert in Houston, who placed his hand in a cast.
The diagnosis confirmed that it must stay in the cast for two months, and thereafter, he will commence a rehabilitation process before getting back to his training.
Charlo was clearly devastated when speaking about the news: “I was sparring and I threw this nice punch and as soon as it landed, I knew something was wrong. I felt my hand throbbing right away. I had two X-rays and an MRI to see what was wrong.
“It showed it was broken in two places. I hate this feeling. My hand will be in a cast for two months. I’m as disappointed as the fans, maybe more, because this was my first chance to defend the undisputed title.”
The upcoming Charlo-Tszyu bout was sure to be one of the best matches of the year. It is a high-stakes contest between two formidable boxer-punchers.
Charlo, the current undisputed 154-pound champion after defeating Brian Castaño in May to unify all four titles, was eager to add another big name to his pound-for-pound resume.
On the other hand, Tszyu was determined to follow in the footsteps of his father, Kostya Tszyu, and become an undisputed world champion. And that is something that is keeping Tszyu motivated.
He stated: “I’m very disappointed. I felt like the stars aligned for undisputed…but we move on. I’m ready to take on the next mandatory challenger. I’ll be back for Charlo once he is ready and healed.”
On Monday, Charlo posted an official doctor’s note along with a photo of his broken hand to shut down claims of a “fake injury.”
37 fights in ain’t never had to postpone shit. I’ll never back out or down from any man. Im King of 154. This ain’t no mental health issue, this ain’t no sling you can buy at a pharmacy like Castano did. Imma bounce back & give my supporters 2 fights this yr. Stay tune. pic.twitter.com/m6wc8s5p1A
