Update On A Claressa Shields Vs. Marie-Eve Dicaire Unification Fight
While she waits for a potential bout with Laila Ali, Claressa Shields will look to continue her quest to tear down the active competition in boxing.
Shields’ co-trainer Mark Taffet told Radio Canada that the junior-middleweight unification bout between Shields and Marie-Eve Dicaire may be taking place in September.
“We are working to finalize the final details, such as the date and location of the fight,” Taffet stated, via Boxing Scene. “The broadcaster, Showtime, will have the final say.”
“The two boxers can rejoice that the promoters’ commitment has remained the same. COVID-19 has created unprecedented obstacles, but each of them is the subject of a search for a solution. I am optimistic that the fight may take place in September, somewhere in the United States.”
A bout between Shields (10-0) and Dicaire (17-0) for the WBC, WBO, IBF, and WBA Light-Middleweight Titles was set for May 9 in Flint, Michigan at the Dort Federal Event Center. As a result of COVID-19, the fight was postponed. Showtime is looking into all the facts surrounding the coronavirus, as it continues to spread across the United States. There may be a chance the event won’t be in Michigan, and Showtime will keep an eye on a few venues and states.
Shields has won the WBA, WBC, WBO, and The Ring Middleweight Titles since making her pro debut in 2016. Following her big win over German star Christina Hammer, Shields vanquished rival Ivana Habazin back in January to win the WBC and WBO Light-Middleweight Titles. The 25-year-old is a two-time Olympic medalist.
A black belt in karate, Dicaire has won the Canadian and World Championships. Fighting fifty times as an amateur, Dicaire won her first major title, the WBC-NABF Light-Middleweight Title in 2018. That was her eleventh pro fight. She then won the IBF Light-Middleweight Title from Chris Namus in 2018 and has defended it three times. Dicaire’s most recent bout was a unanimous decision win over Ogleidis Suarez in November.
