Update on Brook, IBF Welterweight Title
The International Boxing Federation (IBF) has given its welterweight champion, Kell Brook, a 60-day medical extension to recover from surgery required to fix a broken eye socket.
Brook suffered the injury last month when he took on unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, a bout he lost in the fifth round via knockout. Brook stepped up in weight and took on the fight when things between Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez did not work out.
Brook stated previously that he would step up in weight class after the fight, competing at 154 pounds. Now, however, there has been no official word about Brook stepping up in weight.
Should he still choose to go through with this, Brook will be forced to surrender the IBF welterweight title. Reportedly, if this is the case, the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked fighters in the IBF welterweight division — Errol Spence Jr. (21-0, 18 KOs) and Jeff Horn (15-0-1, 10 KOs) — would end up fighting for the vacant title.
