Update on Carl Frampton Vs. Vahram Vardanyan

Another Top Rank-produced main event is going to need to be altered. This time, however, it is not COVID-19 related.

Mike Coppinger of The Athletic is reporting that Frampton’s scheduled opponent for August 15, Vahram Vardanyan, is out of their fight. It is a result of visa issues when attempting to enter the United Kingdom. A potential replacement has not been announced yet.

Vardanyan (21-1-1) is on a six-fight win streak dating back to 2018. Suffering his first loss in 2016, the 31-year-old from Armenia took a year+ away from the ring. His last bout was a split decision win against Yona Segu back in February.

In his quest to fight for gold, Frampton (27-2) will be waiting for Bob Arum to book him another opponent. He last fought in November, beating Tyler McCreary via unanimous decision. It was a rebound following a loss against Josh Warrington. The former IBF and WBA Super-Bantamweight and interim WBO Featherweight Champion is expected to fight for an interim title.

If Frampton can win his upcoming bout, he may end up facing off against Jamel Herring sometime in November. The WBO Junior-Lightweight Champion in Herring is reportedly set to face Jonathan Oquendo on September 5. This comes after the fight between the two was delayed twice due to Herring testing positive for the coronavirus.

The co-main event of Michael Conlan v. Sofiane Takoucht will still go on as planned. The BT Sport Studio in London will hold the fights. Stay tuned as a replacement opponent for Frampton should be announced soon.
