Update On Devin Haney’s Next Fight

It was previously reported that WBC Lightweight Champion Devin Haney would be fighting before the end of the year. Now, plans regarding the 21-year-old’s future are starting to come to fruition.

Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn spoke to IFL TV about a future bout for Haney (24-0). If all goes according to plan, one of two opponents could end up facing Haney.

“He’s fighting on Oct. 3 in the U.S.,” Hearn said, via Boxing Scene. “We’re talking about Yuriorkis Gamboa and Javier Fortuna. [Fortuna] fell out of a fight with Linares, so he’s an option as well … One of those guys is most likely for Devin Haney for Oct. 3. Devin Haney is in the position where he wants the big tests and the big fights.”

Gamboa (30-3) was previously mentioned by Hearn not long ago. He last fought in December, losing to Gervonta Davis via TKO. Hurt through the bout, Gamboa failed to capture the WBA Lightweight Title. A former WBA Featherweight and interim Champion, Gamboa was on a four-fight win streak before the loss.

Fortuna (35-2-1) is currently looking for a new opponent after his August 28 fight with Jorge Linares was scrapped. The latter tested positive for COVID-19 and Hector Tanajara Jr. has been reported as his new opponent. Fortuna is 2-1 in his last four fights win one no-contest. His last fight was a TKO win against Jesus Cuellar in November.

Haney has been out of action due to shoulder surgery in November. He is looking to get back into the thick of things.

“He’s coming off of a year layoff with a shoulder operation,” Hearn went on to say. “So normally you take an easier fight, but that doesn’t exist right now. He’s got his head around that, and he said, ‘Do you know what? Give me a real fight,’ and Fortuna and Gamboa are a real fight for Devin. So we’ll have to see.”

The champion made his professional debut in 2015. He beat Zaur Abdullaev for the interim WBC Lightweight Championship in September. Haney was then promoted to full-time champion after Vasiliy Lomachnko was promoted to “franchise” champion.

Stay tuned for an update on Haney’s fight status.
