Update On George Kambosos Jr. vs. Lee Selby
The purse bid winner for George Kambosos Jr. vs. Lee Selby has been determined.
Kambosos vs. Shelby is scheduled to be an IBF Lightweight Title eliminator. The champion, Teofimo Lopez, is set to take on WBA (Super) and WBO titleholder Vasiliy Lomachenko on October 17 in a title unification bout. Kambosos is looking to keep his perfect record intact.
A purse bid hearing was held by the IBF. Matchroom Boxing ($277,000) outbid Lou DiBella ($260,000). It has been ruled that Kambosos is entitled to the greater portion of a 60/40 split and Selby will likely keep hometown advantage.
The bout between Kambosos and Selby was set to take place on October 3 but negotiations stalled. Kambosos didn’t want to take a 33-percent pay cut, which explains why the bout went back into a purse bid.
Kambosos is coming off a split decision victory over Mickey Bey back on December 14, 2019. The bout took place inside Madison Square Garden in New York City. The victory improved the perfect pro boxing record of Kambosos to 18-0.
Selby scored a majority decision win over Ricky Burns back on October 26, 2019. It was Selby’s second victory in a row. His record improved to 28-2 following the victory.
A former IBF Featherweight Champion, Selby already knows what it’s like to hold a major title. He’s hoping to take home IBF gold once again but this time in the lightweight division. If he defeats Kambosos, he’ll be one step closer to achieving his goal.
