Update On Jon Jones’ Future With The UFC

It has been a busy few days for Jon Jones. During the same day that he announced he will no longer be associated with the UFC Light Heavyweight Title, it appears that Jones will officially be moving up in weight.

Jones posted on social media that he will continue to be active with the UFC and will now make the move to the heavyweight division. It is unknown if he will be fighting for a world title right away.

“Just had a really positive conversation with @Ufc. Sounds like there will be negotiations for my next fight at heavy weight. All good news, the weight gaining process begins.”

Jones (26-1, 1 NC) has recently been in a battle with the UFC and Dana White over pay. This came after Jones attempted to talk with the UFC about a potential “big money fight” featuring him v. heavyweight Francis Ngannou. With talks cooling down, Jones expressed a desire to vacate the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship. He officially did so, while stating he would be glad to watch UFC programming as a fan.

“Just got off the phone with @ufc, today I confirm that I’m vacating the light heavyweight championship. It’s officially up for grabs. It’s been an amazing journey, sincere thank you to all my competition, Ufc and most importantly you fans.”

Now, it appears he is one step closer to his goal. Fights that can be made could be against Ngannou or Stipe Miocic. When asked why he wouldn’t want to hold onto his title and go for two belts, Jones looked at his family history as a factor.

“It would’ve been fun but have you seen the size of the guys in my family? I really do believe putting on a little extra weight is going to bring out my true genetic/athletic potential.”

Jones last fought against Dominick Reyes at UFC 247, beating him via unanimous decision for his eleventh defense of the UFC Light Heavyweight TItle.

Speaking of Reyes, he is currently scheduled to face off against Jan Blachowicz at UFC 253 in September. As an update, it appears the fight will be for the vacant UFC Light Heavyweight Title!
