Update On Potential Manny Pacquiao Vs. Gennadiy Golovkin Fight
It wouldn’t be far off to think that Manny Pacquaio, a welterweight, could face off against middleweight Gennadiy Golovkin. The Senator of the Philipines would be interested, as long as it could benefit him.
Pacquiao spoke to The Manila Times regarding a fight with Golovkin. This comes after trainer Freddie Roach stated that a fight between the two could happen, especially if Pacquaio desired more gold for his collection.
“One thing about Manny: He doesn’t just want to beat anybody, he wants to beat the best out there,” Roach stated. “But the thing is, Manny might want to go a little bit higher and fight GGG or one of those guys who’s supposed to be the best. I would not advise him to go to 160 pounds, no. That would be a little crazy. But putting him at 147 was a risk at one time … and it worked out really good for us.”
Having fought at middleweight before, Pacquiao may not be the biggest fan of the weight gain. He may be interested, however, in fighting Golovkin under the right circumstances.
“As long as it is 147 lbs, I am okay with that. But if it’s above that, it’s too big for me,” Pacquaio stated.
Pacquiao (62-7-2) last fought around 150 pounds ten years ago, when he weighed 144.8 pounds against Antonio Margarito. He would end up winning the WBC Light-Middleweight Title but would not defend the belt. A return to welterweight came soon after. Pacquiao is the current WBA Welterweight Champion, beating Keith Thurman for the belt last July. He has held gold at lightweight, featherweight, bantamweight, and flyweight.
Golovkin (40-1-1) is a two-time middleweight champion. He started holding gold in 2010 and has owned the WBC, IBF, IBO, and WBA titles. The 38-year-old is currently the IBF and IBO Middleweight Champion, beating Sergiy Derevyanchenko for the titles in October.
There may be a chance to salvage the fight, and that would be at 154. That is something, however, that Golovkin may not be interested in doing.
“154? Hmmm. It depends I guess, but there’s no negotiation [between us and the Golovkin camp],” Pacquiao went on to say.
Golovkin is currently in talks to face off against Kamil Szeremeta sometime this year. Meanwhile, there are no planned bouts for Pacquiao as of now.
