Update On The Status Of Joseph Diaz Jr.

Looking to extend its reach in America, MTK Global has added a top champion to its stable.

In an interview with The Athletic, it was revealed that MTK has signed IBF Super-Featherweight Champion Joseph Diaz Jr. to a multi-year advisory deal. He is the first American champion to be added to a stable that features lineal and WBC Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury as well as WBO Super-Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders.

“The reason why I signed with MTK is obviously they have big names and they take care of the fighters,” Diaz said. “This is going to impact my career in a big way and make me the star that I feel I am. Not just in the U.S., but globally.”

Diaz (31-1) made his professional debut in 2012 following an appearance in the 2012 Olympics. A U.S. National Champion in 2011, “Joe Jo” won the WBC-NABF Featherweight Title in 2015. He defended it seven times, before moving to global titles. Diaz lost his first fight in 2018, facing Gary Russell Jr. for the WBC Featherweight Title.

Following the loss, Diaz would win his next five fights. He won the WBA Gold Super-Featherweight Title against Freddy Fonseca. Back in January, Diaz beat Tevin Farmer to win the IBF Super-Featherweight Title. Farmer has since had an interest in a rematch, but the IBF is looking to have Diaz face Shavkat Rakhimov.

The signing of Diaz comes after MTK entered the U.S. market by bringing in Lorenzo Simpson and Jonathan Lopez. Diaz now has a chance to leave his mark all over.

“Not only are they coming to the United States, but they’re all around,” Diaz went on to say. “They have big fighters like Tyson Fury, they have fights in Dubai; they have fights everywhere. I’m really going to take advantage of this opportunity and become a unified champion and make sure I deliver very exciting fights for MTK, the fans and for everybody.”

A date, location, or opponent for Diaz’s next fight is unknown as of this moment.
