When Conor McGregor returned at UFC 246 and beat Donald Cerrone. it was unsure what the next steps in matchmaking were. Would he face Jorge Masvidal or Kamaru Usman? It appears that neither will be available for Conor, as they are planned for a summer showdown.
Dana White went on The Jim Rome Show earlier today during Super Bowl week to talk about upcoming matchups. Situations may have forced his hand, requiring him to make a fight between the UFC Welterweight Champion and the BMF Champion come to fruition.
“We’re going to bring them to Vegas,” White stated, via MMA Fighting. “Him and Usman will fight in Vegas probably International Fight Week. If [Masvidal] wins, maybe we’ll do his first title defense down here in Miami.
“That was always the plan, and then whatever happened with them a couple of days ago, whenever that was,” White continued. We hadn’t announced it yet, but now, this has forced me to announce it.”
The incident Dana is referring to was on radio row. Both Masvidal (35-13) and Usman (16-1) were a part of a pull-apart brawl that involved a heavy amount of security. Masvidal stated that Usman was lucky since his arm was in a cast. The BMF Champion is known for calling out opponents. During a UFC 246 media scrum, Masvidal discussed his options as a fighter, stating neither Conor or Usman would stand a chance.
“Somebody will always have the belt at 170 pounds,” Masvidal said. “It doesn’t really matter if it’s Kamaru or not. Conor is a bigger fight. Now, if Conor doesn’t do his job or Conor doesn’t want to fight after this fight, we’re gonna take Usman’s head off.”
Usman is recovering from an injured left hand he suffered during his fifth-round TKO win over Colby Covington. The fight was set up through a number of factors, one being when the two crossed paths in the buffet line of a Las Vegas Casino, citing a brawl.
Nothing is official yet, but expect an announcement by the UFC sometime in the next few months.
