Usman Nurmagomedov Beats Paul Hughes To Remain Undefeated In A Controversial Decision

Usman Nurmagomedov defeated Paul Hughes to retain his lightweight belt at the PFL Dubai Road to Champions event.

Nurmagomedov won a controversial majority decision, leaving the MMA community divided: 48-46, 48-46, and 47-47. The opening round had little action, with both fighters landing low blows. Round two saw both men open up, with Hughes landing a body kick before Nurmagomedov took his man to the ground. With very little to choose between them, the fourth round produced the most controversy.

Hughes hurt Nurmagomedov with a right hand and leg kick. But they clashed heads, resulting in Hughes bleeding. The referee stopped the fight as Hughes’ momentum slowed down. Nurmagomedov managed to hold on, taking the decision on the cards. He took his undefeated record to 19-0, with one no-contest. Hughes was disappointed, while Nurmagomedov praised his opponent.Ā

“Paul Hughes, brother, you are the man, brother, you are really the man, brother, you’re tough. Honestly, I underestimated this guy, it was my little mistake,” Nurmagomedov

“We all thought I won that one. I think the judges’ scorecards were pretty ridiculous. But I’ll watch it back with a clear mind. I’m just judging from the energy of the arena and everyone surrounding the cage that thought it was mine. I’m not going to make excuses, though. I should’ve pushed harder. And I will the next time. [And] I know we’ll fight again,” Hughes saidĀ
