Usyk Heavyweight Debut Set, Opponent TBA

While there is no opponent in place, Oleksandr Usyk’s debut at heavyweight has been confirmed for October 12, headlining a DAZN card at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Illinois.

The former undisputed cruiserweight champion was originally set to have his first heavyweight bout in May, taking on Carlos Takam, but Usyk was forced out due to a bicep injury. There were attempts to run the fight in October, but Takam is now highly unlikely to be Usyk’s opponent after signing with Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing.

This will be Usyk’s first fight since a dominant run in 2018 that saw him unanimously named Fighter of the Year. During the year, Usyk bested Mairis Briedis and Murat Gassiev to win the World Boxing Super Series and unify the cruiserweight division before retaining the undisputed championship against Tony Bellew in his retirement fight.

Usyk’s move up to heavyweight also guarantees him a mandatory shot at the WBO heavyweight championship, whether it be against the winner of Andy Ruiz Jr. vs. Anthony Joshua or a vacant world championship.
