Usyk Stripped Of WBC Title, Now Champ In Recess

Oleksandr Usyk has lost another championship, as the former undisputed cruiserweight champion has been stripped of his WBC title, sorta.

The WBC has announced that Usyk is now the “champion in recess,” which allows him the time to recover from a recent training injury, and gives him the chance to fight again for the title at any time if he chooses to move back down to 205 pounds.

Usyk would unite the cruiserweight championships in 2018, after winning the World Boxing Super Series at 205 pounds, earning the WBC, WBA, WBO, and IBF titles in the process.

The Ukrainian fighter would defend the titles once, when he would retire Tony Bellew in November 2018 in eight rounds.

Since beating Bellew, Usyk signed with Matchroom Boxing to help his transition into the heavyweight division, and has been stripped of the WBA title, now in the possession of former mandatory challenger Denis Lebedev.
