Valdez Reportedly Returning To Nevada In July

Looking to sync fighters together, Top Rank will be requesting the services of one of its top competitors.

ESPN is reporting that Oscar Valdez will be returning to action in July, against an opponent to be determined later. Valdez (27-0) last fought in November, beating Adam Lopez via TKO.

The idea behind this upcoming fight would be that Valdez would be all warmed up for a potential clash with WBC Super-Featherweight Champion Miguel Berchelt. The 28-year-old Berchelt (37-1) has defended his title six times, most recently against Jason Sosa back in November. He is currently set to face off against WBO Junior-Flyweight Champion Elwin Soto on June 27. Hosted by Zanfer Promotions, the non-title fight will take place in Mexico.

Valdez told Top Rank’s Crystina Poncher that Berchelt is the only fighter he wanted to prove himself against. That is why he vacated the WBO Featherweight Title not that long ago.

“We only have one fighter in mind right now, which is ‘El Alacran’ Berchelt because I’m the mandatory fighter,” Valdez stated. “It’s a mandatory fight, and there were rumors it was going to be May 9. I was already back in training camp in San Diego for May 9, but then we got the news that {May 9} was Jose Ramirez and Viktor Postol. We just continued training. It wasn’t going to hurt us to remain in camp.

“The fight has to happen. I think, on our side, we’re ready to sign the contract because I’m going for my dream. I want that belt. We want to make it official, and I was already training for that fight. Right now, we just gotta train back home. It is what it is.”

Valdez won the WBO Featherweight Title by beating Matias Rueda back in 2016. He defended it six times, up until June 2019. Valdez has 21 wins via knockout.

Top Rank is looking to return to Nevada in June, following a hopeful ruling by the Nevada Athletic Commission. Stay tuned as an announcement on Valdez’s opponent should be made soon.
