VanZant Explains Move To Flyweight

Paige VanZant cited not only her own issues with weight cutting, but another person’s medical emergency as the reason she moved up from strawweight to flyweight.

VanZant, who is currently recovering from a broken arm suffered in her last fight, claimed to the BBC that cutting the 20 pounds needed to get to 115 pounds was causing serious issues.

“I was having different issues with myself and my body. I was giving myself an eating disorder to make the weight.” VanZant said.

And while her first attempt at the new flyweight division lead to a loss, witnessing the effects of another fighter’s weight cut put the idea into perspective.

”I was at a fight where a fellow UFC fighter, Uriah Hall, was cutting weight and he pushed himself just to the brink of death. He had kidney failure and started seizing in the hallway right in front of me.

”It’s because of that I’m like ‘I can’t do this anymore.’
