Vasiliy Lomachenko Likely to Face George Kambosos As WBO Mandatory Challenger
Top Rank Chairman Bob Arum feels that the WBO will make Vasily Lomachenko the mandatory challenger for the undisputed lightweight champion, George Kambosos Jr.
But for this showdown to be on the card, Lomachenko will have to defeat Richard Commey (30-3, 27 KOs), a former IBF lightweight champion who has a knack for winning crucial title fights. They will box on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, New York.
Arum is excited to embark for Australia right when the WBO, as he predicts, confirms the matchup.
The veteran promoter is hopeful that his fighter can clinch all titles from Kambosos, who is coming off a sublime victory over Teofimo Lopez two weeks ago.
“He’s going to have to fight them and they’re good fighters, but Loma in good health can beat all of them. That really is true,” Arum told Fighthype.
“Lomachenko is something special. His loss to Teofimo [Lopez] can be explained by the fact that he had a bad shoulder, which was operated on a couple of days after the fight.”
If it unfolds as Arum foresees, Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn will not be a happy man. Hearn has been willing to put Devin Haney against the Australian star for a while now.
