Vasiliy Lomachenko has some kind words for Teofimo Lopez as a boxer.
Lomachenko is set to share the boxing ring with Lopez on October 17. The title unification bout will headline a Top Rank Boxing card. Lomachenko is the WBA (Super) and WBO Lightweight Champion. Lopez holds the IBF gold.
This is considered to be the biggest fight of 2020 and with it has come some animosity. Lopez hasn’t been shy in expressing his belief that Lomachenko has one foot out the door. While Lomachenko hasn’t taken too kindly to the trash talk, he admits the skills of Lopez aren’t to be taken lightly. Here’s what Lomachenko told ESPN’s Max Kellerman (h/t BoxingScene.com).
“He is an excellent puncher, he has a high boxing IQ, he is younger, but we have the same fights on the list. I have vast experience during my fights in 12 rounds. So we will see how he can hold his own during the fight. I started to watch his fights, and I started to learn [about] him. I saw his boxing IQ, and he understands what he needs to do. He starts to feel his opponents very well. So we’ll see. It’ll be a very interesting fight for all of the boxing family.”
This is set to be Lomachenko’s fourth WBA Title defense and the third time he puts the WBO Championship up for grabs. Lopez will be putting his IBF gold on the line for the first time. The winner will walk away lacking just one major championship at 135 pounds, that being the WBC Title which is held by Devin Haney.
Lomachenko vs. Lopez will be held inside the MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Tickets will be given away to first responders. Sponsors will also be allowed in the building but not the general public.
