Vassell: “I’m Going To Smash Heavyweight Division”

Fighting for the first time since his Bellator 200 loss to Phil Davis, Linton Vassell looks to push past back to back losses with a move to heavyweight.

Speaking with FIGHT SPORTS prior to fight night, Vassell said this camp has been the best he’s had because he hasn’t felt depleted going into the cage.

“My body isn’t going through that much torture,” the British fighter said of no longer needing to cut weight to make 205 pounds.

The energy may help Vassell bounce back after two straight losses inside the Bellator cage, as “win or lose” he was leaving the light heavyweight division.

“I’ve never had two losses in a row,” citing his losses to both Davis and a light heavyweight title fight loss to Ryan Bader. “So this has lit a fire, and (Valentin Moldavsky) is the perfect guy to fight. He’s 7-1, he’s beaten a lot of good people,” Vassell said of the Rizin veteran who makes his Bellator debut on March 22nd.

“I’m coming to smash people up.”

Now being able to fight at his natural weight, Vassell is excited to test the depth of Bellator’s heavyweight division, especially a rematch against former opponent and current light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Ryan Bader.

“No one likes to lose,” Vassell said of his 2017 loss to Bader at Bellator 186. “I want to be the champion, I want to avenge that loss. That’s ignited a bigger fire in me… I wanna be the best, (this fight is what I need) to prove I’m ready to face the best.”

“I don’t care who’ve they got for me to be honest. (Scott Coker) mentioned Fedor, Chael Sonnen, Roy Nelson, and I’ve said yes to all of them. They’re guys I’ll be facing at some point in my career, so I’m not looking past Valentin, but once we get past that we can look at the next one.”
