Velasquez Unsure If Miocic Deserves Title Shot

Ever since the end of UFC 226, former heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic feels he deserves a rematch against Daniel Cormier for the UFC heavyweight title.

Cormier, who knocked Miocic out in the first round of their main event, feels that Miocic needs to win another fight before a rematch can happen. Agreeing with the sentiments of Cormier is former two-time heavyweight champion and Cormier’s training partner, Cain Velasquez.

“Stipe just put in work when he needed to do it, and he won when he needed to do it. My hat’s off to him, with the guys that he’s fought. I believe he’s been a great champion,” Velasquez said of Miocic. “I knew just going in and watching him throughout his career, I knew how good he was.

“When [Daniel Cormier] had the opportunity to fight him, I didn’t see anywhere where Daniel would lose that fight. I was pretty confident in that,” he continued.

“Just because you were the reigning, defending heavyweight champion, doesn’t mean you get a title shot right away.”

For Cormier, who is near the end of his career, is more interested in fighting Brock Lesnar over any other option, but with Lesnar’s status up in the air heading into Wrestlemania 35 in April, it seems anything can happen before Cormier walks away from the sport.
