Vergil Ortiz Jr. has announced his exit from Golden Boy Promotions, as the interim super welterweight titleholder’s battle with the company in court continues.
Golden Boy used the legal system to block Ortiz from setting up a fight with Jaron “Boots” Ennis, which many consider the best possible fight to make at 154-pounds, by using a third-party temporary restraining order. Ortiz filed an appeal to dissolve the order, but the judge did not rule in his favor.
According to reports, the fight between Ortiz and Ennis was nearly finalized, with a date of April 18th in Las Vegas. Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions filed the restraining order once they had learned that Ortiz had intentions of working with other promoters for this bout, which is well within his rights.
Ortiz took to social media to announce that he is leaving the Oscar De La Hoya founded promotion, and also revealed that he would be moving forward into arbitration and to the court appeal with Golden Boy.
