Vernon Forrest Ends Shane Mosley’s Welterweight Championship Run – January 26, 2002 (This Day In Boxing History)
Vernon Forrest is one of those athletes many fans wonder how far he could’ve gone in his career.
Forrest met Shane Mosley 20 years ago today and shook the image of what many thought was the best pound-for-pound fighter at the time. Forrest defeated Mosley via unanimous decision for his WBC welterweight title.
During the fight, Forrest managed to knock down Mosley twice in the second round. Mosley also sustained a cut at the hairline from accidentally clashing heads in that same round.
The two would meet again in July that same year and won again via unanimous decision, adding another blemish to Mosley’s decorated career.
He went on to win multiple world championships in two weight classes including the WBC, IBF, Ring magazine and lineal welterweight between 2002 and 2003. He also won the WBC super welterweight title twice between 2007 and 2009.
He was named Fighter of the Year in 2002 by The Ring and the Boxing Writers Association of America.
Forrest died on July 25, 2009. He was murdered after he was robbed at a gas station.
