Wahlstrom: Harper ‘Rather Easy To Read’

One of the most highly-anticipated fights of the weekend will be a super-featherweight battle between a veteran and a young rising star. Eva Wahlstrom and Terri Harper are set to face off on Saturday, February 8 inside the FlyDSA Arena in Sheffield, England for the WBC and IBO World Super-Featherweight Titles. In a bout that is considered a true showcase for women’s boxing, a lot is on the line for both fighters.

For the quiet Wahlstrom (23-1-2), this her chance to end the hype train of the 23-year-old Harper (9-0). Looking to defend the WBC Title for the sixth time, Wahlstrom is perfectly fine with being considered the underdog in the fight. The reality of being overlooked by several outlets drives the Finnish fighter to come out with a win on Saturday.

“Betting agencies have set odds for Harper as a clear favourite and that’s definitely something which has given me extra motivation in a build-up,” said Wahlstrom during the final press conference before the fight. “Being seen as an underdog is that kind of stimuli which one needs in order to really ‘get up’ for a challenge after already engaging in several title defenses.”

Wahlstrom is coming off of a unanimous decision win over Consolata Musanga in November. She is 1-1-1 in her last three, with her only loss of her career coming against Katie Taylor back in 2018 for the WBA and IBF Lightweight Championships. Previewing the fight earlier this week, it was noted that Harper is confident in her ability to take down the veteran and potentially face Taylor down the line.

“Eva is a solid opponent who has shared the ring with some great female boxers over a long career,” Harper stated during camp to Matchoom. “She has more experience than me but she is nearly 40 and I feel it is my time now, to take the baton and get the win. I feel like I have long-range and won’t get dragged into a brawl. We have seen that she is open to that back hand so that is what we have been working with in the gym, I want to get back on my knockout streak!”

Harper is coming off of a unanimous decision win over Viviane Obenauf in November. It was her first non-KO win since December 2018. With a number of more fights under her belt, Wahlstrom commends Harper’s confidence. However, the veteran believes her experience and overall skill will outpoint everything Harper tries to throw at her.

“I see Harper as a young and hungry challenger who is smart and technical but also somewhat inexperienced. She is also so schoolbook-correct in her style that she should be rather easy to read in the ring. I believe that I have an edge and ability to adapt and change tactics mid-fight.”

Wahlstrom v. Harper will be featured on the undercard of a Matchroom Boxing-produced event that will have Kell Brook v. Mark DeLuca as the main event.
