Warren: Saunders-GGG Can Happen, But Not In May
With Canelo Alvarez now out of his scheduled May 5th rematch with Gennady Golovkin, there are many fighters looking to get a crack at Golovkin. One fighter who would love to prove himself against Golovkin, is WBO middleweight champion Billy Jose Saunders.
Frank Warren, who promotes Saunders, claims that his fighter wants to be next to face Golovkin, but not on Cinco De Mayo.
While Golovkin will have to change venues from the T-Mobile Arena, to reportedly the MGM Grand, Warren has an offer to bring him to the United Kingdom, but in June.
Saunders, who was originally set to Martin Murray, is rehabbing an injury suffered in training. Warren told the Daily Mail that Saunders would be ready to go by early June.
“Although Billy Joe can’t recover in time for May 5 he could go as early as the first or second Saturday in June. I am making a huge offer for Gennady to come to a football ground in London. Otherwise we are just as happy to go to Las Vegas, where Golovkin is keen to headline for the first time in his career,” Warren told Daily Mail.
“It might be wiser for Gennady to take a slightly smaller arena in June and fill it with Billy Joe, who really believes he has a great chance of winning that fight.”
