Warren Thinks Groves-Saunders Can Happen
Following an impressive performance in the semi-finals of the World Boxing Super Series, promoter Frank Warren wants to put George Groves in the ring against Billy Joe Saunders at super-middleweight.
“George has done well for himself, coming off of those losses that he had in his career. More importantly, for me, that fight has opened up another avenue,” Warren explained to iFL on Monday afternoon.
“I don’t know how his shoulder is and I hope his shoulder’s going to be ok. I know he’s going to fight Callum Smith [or Juergen Braehmer] in the final of this tournament. But if he can’t, Bill would go up to Super Middleweight and box him.”
Per a report from Boxing Scene, the fight would be after Saunders next defense of his WBO middleweight title in April against Martin Murray, that is if Saunders cannot lock in a fight against the winner of the Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez fight.
In April, Saunders defends his WBO 160lb belt against Martin Murray in London. While his ultimate goal is to fight the winner of the Gennady Golovkin v Canelo Alvarez rematch, if that does not materialise he will be forced to look at other options.
“We can make that fight,” said Warren. “George if you’re looking for the fight with Bill, we can do that. There’s a truckload of money for everybody to be made there. You guys could make some seriously good money.”
