Was Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor 2 On The Table?
Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor II may have been closer to happening than we realize.
Nurmagomedov and McGregor shared the Octagon back on October 6, 2018. “The Eagle” defeated McGregor via submission in the fourth round. There was a lot of bad blood going into that fight and it still lingers today.
UFC President Dana White hasn’t been shy in expressing his belief that a rematch between Nurmagomedov and the “Notorious” one is the biggest fight the UFC can make. Up to this point, however, it hasn’t come to fruition.
Speaking to Robbie Fox of Barstool Sports, White claimed that the wheels were in motion to have Mcgregor and Khabib serve as opposing coaches on The Ultimate Fighter. The UFC boss explained what went awry (h/t MMAJunkie.com).
“He was going to do it until Conor did all of this (expletive) [leaking text messages]. I almost had it. That’s what I was saying: I felt like I was in a good place and I was going to get that done. We were going to do ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ on ESPN and (expletive) do the rematch. But you know, Conor blew that. … Yeah, Khabib said (expletive) him.”
Nurmagomedov is set to take on interim UFC Lightweight Champion Justin Gaethje in a title unification bout. “The Eagle” is the main champion. The bout will headline UFC 254 inside the Flash Forum on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.
McGregor last fought in January. He scored a TKO victory over Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in 40 seconds. He has been calling for a charity bout with Dustin Poirier. White says both men have been offered a fight.
