WATCH: Canelo Alvarez Stops Avni Yildirim, Retains Gold

The super-middleweight title bout between champion Canelo Alvarez and Avni Yildirim is in the books.

On Saturday night, February 27, Canelo put the WBA (Super), WBC, and The Ring Super-Middleweight Titles on the line against Yildirim. The title fight was held inside Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida. This was Canelo’s first defense of the 168-pound gold.

Going into the fight, Canelo had the edge in terms of activity. He had just competed back in December, while Yildirim last stepped inside the ring in February 2019.

In the opening round, Canelo didn’t hesitate to mix up his body punches and head shots. Yildirim did not respond with much offense.

Things didn’t get better for Yildirim in the second round. Canelo began to find a home for the uppercut. In the third round, Canelo dropped Yildirim, who managed to make it to the bell but his corner had seen enough.

Canelo retained his gold via third-round TKO. Here are video highlights courtesy of DAZN Boxing.
