Tom Loeffler has confirmed that this is not the end of the feud between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin, as his fighter is setting his sights on a rescheduled rematch.
Loffler while speaking with TMZ confirmed that Golovkin wants a rematch with Alvarez on September 15th, the weekend of Mexican Independence day.
“100%, that’s the main focus for GGG. Its the biggest fight in boxing, they both want the rematch,” said Golovkin’s promoter on Wednesday.
Loeffler also confirmed that Golovkin is frustrated that their originally scheduled date of May 5th isn’t happening, and that there is a lot of “bad blood” between GGG and Alvarez.
“My understanding is that they’ve not spoken directly with each other.. we’ll see with the commission and how they rule.”
Any planning will need to be put on hold till after April 18th, when Alvarez will learn his fate from the Nevada State Athletic Commission. The Mexican superstar was suspended following failing two consecutive drug tests due to the drug clenbuterol.
The suspension could be between six months and a year, dating from the initial failed test in February. Loeffler hopes that Alvarez will be ready by September.
