WBA Issues Status Of Lightweight ‘Champion In Recess’ To Gervonta Davis
Because of his ongoing legal troubles, former WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis has been named ‘Champion in Recess’ by the sanctioning body, opening up the possibility of a fight for the vacant title.
Tank hasn’t fought since his March 2025 majority draw against Lamont Roach Jr. Since then, Davis has run into legal trouble that included the championship boxer being arrested multiple times and charged with battery assault.
Despite being in the middle of ongoing cases at this time, ‘Tank’ started to plan his return. He dropped his longtime trainer, Calvin Ford, and teamed up with Jose Benavidez Sr, but surely plans are changing for Davis’ team as it was expected they would try to line up a fight with mandatory challenger Floyd “Kid Austin” Schofield.
The more likely scenario now is for Schofield to square off with the No. 2 ranked 135-pound contender, Lucas Bahdi for the vacant WBA lightweight title.
