WBA Postpones Purse Bids For Rolando Romero Vs. Ohara Davies

The WBA has postponed the purse bid for the Rolando Romero and Ohara Davies’ mandatory fight at junior welterweight.

According to reports, the purse bid was set to go ahead on July 24th, 2023, as Romero seeks to defend his WBA belt.

Although that may have been the case, it has now been rescheduled after Romero’s team submited some medical information. As of now, the medical issue has not been disclosed.

“Romero’s team presented a medical report which is being analyzed by our medical committee members. For that reason, WBA Championships Committee has decided to postpone [the purse bid] until further notice,” WBA

Romero was set to face Davies following his ninth-round-stoppage win over Ismael Barroso as he grabbed the WBA belt.

The win, though, was marred by controversy with suggestions that the referee (Tony Weeks) had stopped the fight too early.

After all, at the time of the stoppage, Barroso was firing back and was ahead on all the scorecards.

But given that Romero won a vacant title, he is obligated to face his mandatory as a fight with Ryan Garcia may have to be put on hold.

Meanwhile, Davies became the mandatory following a ninth-round-stoppage victory over Lewis Ritson. That victory extended Davies’ winning streak to seven in a row.

So as soon as the medical issue is reviewed, the quicker the postponed period will become clearer.
