WBC Declares Terence Crawford ‘Champion In Recess’ At 147

The WBC has made Terence Crawford a ‘Champion in Recess’ at 147.

The news means Crawford would have a title shot if he returns to 147. If he does not, Mario Barrios will likely become the full champion since he is the WBC Interim Welterweight Champion. Bud’s next fight is against Israil Madrimov on August 3 for the WBA Junior Middleweight Title. A win sets up a unification at 154 or a big fight with Canelo Alvarez at 168 for undisputed.

That means Crawford’s time at welterweight is likely to be over. The only big fight at 147 appears to be Jaron Ennis. Crawford was meant to face him since Boots was mandatory for the IBF belt. But Crawford was stripped since he had to face Errol Spence Jr. in the rematch, even if the fight was later scrapped. Crawford had stopped Spence to become the first Undisputed Welterweight Champion of the four-belt era. Having accomplished everything at 147, Crawford seems unlikely to fight at welterweight.

“The WBC Board of Governors has voted in favor of accepting our proud WBC welterweight champion, Terence Crawford, to be placed as champion in recess in the welterweight division. The WBC Board also voted in favor of officially sanctioning Crawford vs. Madrimov as a final elimination bout for the mandatory position in the super welterweight division. Terence Crawford will inform the WBC which division he wishes to compete in after the August fight,” WBC said
